Portage Bill

Date: March 11, 1871
Voyage: Alice M. Minott (d. Philadelphia Jan. 4, 1871 - a. Antwerp Mar. 4, 1871)
Citation: MS-90 b42f15

Notes

Payment in Antwerp was in Belgian Francs: notation appears to be "Frs" in the first line under Advance at Antwerp. For all but 3 records on the Portage Bill, the amounts given in the column headed Amount Due (in US$) are equal to 0.6 times the amount shown in the column headed Advance at Antwerp, so the exchange rate is calculated to be $0.60 per Belgian Franc. The 3 odd records include those for Mate Mountfort, 2nd Mate Keefe, 3rd Mate Stetsen. Keefe had an Amount Due of $59.06 but an amount paid at Antwerp of Fr 236.24. Both Mountfort and Stetson have amounts given under Advance at Antwerp, but no Discharged dates, Duration of Service, Total Amount of Wages, or Amount Due figures entered.

The information given in this database is entered here as it is on the document or documents in the Maine Maritime Museum collections. The spelling of the mariner’s name may be wrong, the arithmetic may be wrong, and some descriptions may be thoughtless or not politically correct, but they are shown as found. We have attempted to standardize the names and descriptions of vessels and the spelling of place names. We have tried to include in notes fields important information that does not fit in the standard fields.
