Baker, Moses | Seaman | July 26, 1870 | Charleston, SC - USA | Sept. 28, 1870 | Liverpool, England | 30.00 | 30.00 | 72.48 | It's not clear from the document whether this mariner deserted (it isn't indicated that he did) or couldn't continue with the ship for some other non-desertion reason. The document has no entries for Duration of Service, Whole Wages, and Balance Due. The amount in the column for Wages per Month is "20/30" written as "20" on top of a horizontal line with "30" below. The amount for Hospital Money is 0.60 but it is crossed out. At the right of the entry is the notation "Paid to Consul at Liverpool" but not an indication of how much, and for what. Amount written for Advance at Liverpool written in is shown on document as [pounds] 14-9-11, which converts to $72.48; the standard exchange rate of $5.00/pound since no exchange rate was given. | |||||||||

The information given in this database is entered here as it is on the document or documents in the Maine Maritime Museum collections. The spelling of the mariner’s name may be wrong, the arithmetic may be wrong, and some descriptions may be thoughtless or not politically correct, but they are shown as found. We have attempted to standardize the names and descriptions of vessels and the spelling of place names. We have tried to include in notes fields important information that does not fit in the standard fields.
