Rummell, James | Steward | Oct. 18, 1871 | New York, NY - USA | 30.00 | The document stated only the steward was to be paid wages in any currency other than "United States paper currency", and that was "gold or its equivalent"; however, in the column headed Wages Per Month, the entry for the steward shows "6=00=0" with these notations just above: the symbol for British pounds just above the 6; "S" just above the "00" and "d" [which is the abbreviation for pence] just above the "0". So this was taken to mean the equivalent of 6 pounds even per month. Amounts shown are in U.S. $. No currency conversion rate given on document, so standard conversion rate of $5.00/British Pound used. | |||||||||||||

The information given in this database is entered here as it is on the document or documents in the Maine Maritime Museum collections. The spelling of the mariner’s name may be wrong, the arithmetic may be wrong, and some descriptions may be thoughtless or not politically correct, but they are shown as found. We have attempted to standardize the names and descriptions of vessels and the spelling of place names. We have tried to include in notes fields important information that does not fit in the standard fields.
