This is record of payment to a shipping master, John M Peed, of advances and shipping fees for 6 seaman and a cook - the advance for a 7th seaman was crossed out, so he presumably didn't sign on. The first leg of the voyage was short - just to Alexandria VA. Capt Lowell writes to the owner, Minott, on December 14 from Alexandria saying that he hasn't heard where Minott wants the ship to go next, so he's going to go to Philadelphia on his own judgment. He tried to find more seamen in Baltimore, going there himself on Dec 12 (there is a hotel bill for a night's stay), but reports that he couldn't find any, the demand for substitutes is taking all the men. However, he was still at Alexandria the next week, and in a letter dated December 23 1862 to Minott Capt Lowell mentions that "...my crew has all run. I shall have to get another from Baltimore when I make a start again." So the seamen listed on this document may have all left. The cook. George Ralph, remained.Financial records

Abbreviations: P – Payment, the total amount due the mariner for the voyage; WPM – Wages per month, the usual way seamen were paid; WPR – Wages per run: occasionally, mariners took a set amount for a run between two places; A – Advance, the amount the mariner received in advance of the voyage, for signing on; S – Slops, amount for goods purchased from the vessel’s store; CA – Creditor allotment, amount paid to creditors if so listed; AA – Advanced abroad, cash advances the mariner received while in foreign ports; H – Hospital money, a small monthly amount deducted to support the marine hospital service; SF – Shipping fees, paid to shipping agents for their services; F&F – Fines and forfeitures, if so listed, including prison fees; BD – Balance due, after all of the above
